The book: Spacetime Physics (Taylor - Wheeler) - missing solutions

In summary, the conversation discusses a book called "Spacetime Physics - Introduction to Special Relativity; Second Edition" and the fact that it only provides solutions to odd-numbered exercises. The purpose for this is so instructors can assign the even-numbered exercises as homework for grading.

Hi
I have buyed the book Spacetime physics - Introduction to Special Relativity; Second Edition.

It is a great book, although I am currently only at second chapter.

There are exercises with solutions in this book. The problem is, there are solutions only to odd numbered exercises. Can I find somewhere solutions to even-numbered ones?

Is it a purpose by authors, that some exercises don't have solutions in the book, so readers cannot controll themselves?

Thanks for any help
Tomas

Yes. Instructors who use the book for a course that they are teaching, can assign exercises that don't have solutions given, as homework that is to be submitted for grading (marking). This is very common in the US, maybe not as common elsewhere.

Related to The book: Spacetime Physics (Taylor - Wheeler) - missing solutions

1. What is the book "Spacetime Physics" about?

The book "Spacetime Physics" by Taylor and Wheeler is a textbook that provides an introduction to the concepts of special and general relativity. It covers topics such as spacetime diagrams, the Lorentz transformation, and the geometry of spacetime.

2. Why are there missing solutions in the book?

The authors intentionally left out some solutions to problems in the book to encourage readers to think critically and come up with their own solutions. This also allows for more flexibility in the classroom and encourages students to work together and discuss their approaches.

3. Are the missing solutions necessary for understanding the concepts in the book?

No, the missing solutions do not affect the understanding of the concepts presented in the book. The authors provide enough examples and explanations for readers to grasp the material without relying on the solutions to problems.

4. Can I find the missing solutions online?

Yes, there are several websites and forums where individuals have shared their solutions to the missing problems in the book. However, it is recommended to try solving the problems on your own before seeking out solutions online.

5. Is "Spacetime Physics" suitable for beginners?

While the book may be challenging for those with no prior knowledge of physics, it is designed to be accessible to beginners. The authors provide clear explanations and examples to help readers understand the complex concepts of relativity. It is also commonly used as a textbook for introductory college-level courses.
