What is the voltage across C2 in this circuit?

In summary, when solving for the potential difference across C2, the formula Q=CV can be used. After finding C23 and Q23, the voltage across C2 (V2) can be determined using the equation Q23 = C2V2. However, if the initial conditions, such as initial charges, are not specified, the answer may differ from the expected 20V.

Find the pd accros C2

Homework Equations

Q=CV

The Attempt at a Solution

i find C23 = (C2C3)/ (C2 + C3)
then find Q23 = V x C23
Q23 = Q2 = C2V2 => V2

i used this and got V2 = 15V , however the answer is 20V , and i even didnt use the data of C1 . am i wrong somewhere ?

Your answer looks fine, unless there are some initial conditions (such as initial charges) that weren't specified. C2 and C3 form a voltage divider which is across the supply 30 V, and since they are of equal capacitance they must must divide the voltage... how?

Related to What is the voltage across C2 in this circuit?

1. What is "Pd across capacitance"?

"Pd across capacitance" refers to the voltage drop or potential difference that occurs across a capacitor when it is connected to a power source. It is also known as "capacitor voltage" or "capacitor potential."

2. How is Pd across capacitance calculated?

The Pd across capacitance can be calculated by dividing the charge stored in the capacitor by its capacitance value. It can also be calculated by multiplying the current flowing through the capacitor by its impedance.

3. What factors affect Pd across capacitance?

The Pd across capacitance can be affected by the capacitance value, the voltage of the power source, and the frequency of the alternating current flowing through the capacitor. The distance between the plates of the capacitor and the dielectric material used can also impact the Pd across capacitance.

4. Why is Pd across capacitance important?

Pd across capacitance is important because it affects the performance and efficiency of electronic circuits and devices. It is used to control and store electrical energy, and is a key component in many electronic systems such as power supplies, filters, and oscillators.

5. How can Pd across capacitance be reduced?

Pd across capacitance can be reduced by using capacitors with lower capacitance values, increasing the distance between the plates, using dielectrics with higher permittivity, and reducing the frequency of the alternating current. Additionally, using multiple capacitors in parallel can also decrease the overall Pd across capacitance.
