Suitable Wires for Antennae and Magnet Wire: Exploring Options

In summary, the conversation discussed options for finding suitable wires for winding an antenna and magnet wire. It was suggested to visit an electronics surplus store for affordable options, as the wires inside a CAT5E cable are not coated and the wires from a drill may be too thick.

I'm looking for magnet wire, think this is just fine copper wire that is varnished, and some wire that's suitable for winding to make a antennae.

Would the wires inside a CAT5E cable do for the antennae and the wires from the windings in an electric drill do for the magnet wire?

Thanks
AL

Just go to electronics surplus store in your area. I just bought a small roll for $9.99 to wind some guitar pickup coil. Not the wires inside the CAT5 is not coated.

Wires in the drill is coated wires. You can use it for magnetic wires, but they are usually quite thick.

What is "scrounging for components"?

"Scrounging for components" is the act of finding and collecting various electronic or mechanical parts from different sources in order to build or repair a device or project.

Why is "scrounging for components" important?

Scrounging for components is important because it allows scientists to save money and resources by reusing existing parts instead of purchasing new ones. It also promotes creativity and problem-solving skills by challenging scientists to find alternative solutions.

What are some common sources for scrounging components?

Common sources for scrounging components include old electronics, computer hardware, appliances, and even discarded items from construction or manufacturing sites. Online marketplaces and local electronics stores may also have surplus or used components for sale.

What should I consider when scrounging for components?

When scrounging for components, it is important to consider the compatibility and functionality of the parts. Make sure the components you find are compatible with your project and are in good working condition. It is also important to consider safety precautions, such as handling potentially hazardous materials with proper protective gear.

Are there any disadvantages to scrounging for components?

While scrounging for components can be a cost-effective and creative solution, it may also be time-consuming and unpredictable. There is no guarantee that the components you find will work or be suitable for your project. Additionally, it may be difficult to find specific or rare components through scrounging alone.
