Magnetic Bearings Basics: Permanent Magnets Explained

In summary, the conversation is about understanding magnetic bearings and their basic principles, preferably in terms of permanent magnets rather than electromagnets. The main question is whether the rotating shaft and stator must be aligned with the same poles of magnets in a symmetrical way for the bearing to work properly. Several links were provided for more information, including one from the company Steorn, which has made controversial claims about free energy.

Greetings, I want to understand magnetic bearings better , i used google search but couldn't find a simple and satisfying picture or diagram.
Could someone please explain the very basics? I would prefer in terms of permanent magnets rather than electromagnets because that would simplify the picture.

If we have a rotating shaft and a so called sator does the shaft and stator has to be aligned with the same poles of magnets in a symmetrical way so hat each stator pole would push equally from all sides and the rotor shaft would saty right in the middle or what?

thank you.

Related to Magnetic Bearings Basics: Permanent Magnets Explained

1. What are magnetic bearings?

Magnetic bearings are a type of bearing that use a magnetic field to support a rotating shaft without any physical contact. They are commonly used in high-speed rotating machinery such as turbines, motors, and generators.

2. How do magnetic bearings work?

Magnetic bearings work by utilizing the principle that opposite magnetic poles attract each other while like poles repel each other. The bearings use permanent magnets to create a stable magnetic field that supports the rotating shaft, allowing it to float without any friction.

3. What are permanent magnets?

Permanent magnets are magnets that have a constant magnetic field and do not require an external source of power to maintain their magnetic properties. They are typically made from materials such as iron, nickel, and cobalt and are commonly used in magnetic bearings.

4. What are the advantages of using magnetic bearings?

Magnetic bearings offer several advantages over traditional mechanical bearings. They have no physical contact, which eliminates the need for lubrication and reduces maintenance. They also have lower friction and vibration, leading to increased energy efficiency and longer lifespan of the machinery.

5. Are there any limitations to using magnetic bearings?

While magnetic bearings have many benefits, they also have some limitations. They are more expensive to manufacture and require a higher level of expertise to design and maintain. They are also not suitable for high-temperature or high-pressure environments, which may limit their use in certain industries.
