Local stress on thin cylindrical shell

In summary, the conversation discusses the calculation of deformation and bending in a thin cylindrical plate under local stress. The speaker is seeking information on how to calculate this, as most available equations refer to uniform external pressure. They also mention a manual calculation method using a specific website. It is noted that any external force will cause the plate to deform or bend, though the degree may vary.

Hello

I have a local stress acting radial on a thin cylindrical plate (see illustration), how can I calculate if the plate will deform/bend?

I can only find equations for uniform external pressure (Marcel Dekker), but will it be okay when the stress is only local?

Related to Local stress on thin cylindrical shell

1. What is local stress on a thin cylindrical shell?

The local stress on a thin cylindrical shell refers to the amount of force per unit area that is applied to a specific point on the shell. This type of stress is caused by a localized load or pressure, rather than a uniform load that is evenly distributed over the entire surface of the shell.

2. How is local stress calculated on a thin cylindrical shell?

The calculation of local stress on a thin cylindrical shell involves using the thin shell theory, which takes into account the material properties, geometry and loading conditions of the shell. The most commonly used method is the membrane theory, which assumes that the shell is subjected to pure tension or compression without any bending.

3. What factors can affect local stress on a thin cylindrical shell?

Several factors can affect the amount of local stress on a thin cylindrical shell. These include the thickness and material properties of the shell, the magnitude and distribution of the load or pressure applied, and the shape and size of the shell. Additionally, any imperfections or defects in the shell can also impact the local stress.

4. How does local stress affect the structural integrity of a thin cylindrical shell?

Excessive local stress on a thin cylindrical shell can lead to structural failure, as it can cause the shell to buckle, deform or rupture. It is important to carefully consider the local stress distribution and ensure that it does not exceed the maximum stress that the shell can withstand without compromising its integrity.

5. What are some common applications of thin cylindrical shells?

Thin cylindrical shells are commonly used in engineering and manufacturing for a variety of applications, such as pressure vessels, pipes, tanks, and aircraft or spacecraft structures. They are also used in everyday objects, such as cans, bottles, and even some musical instruments, due to their strength and lightweight properties.
