I would think that it is highly contextual and dependent upon which department you wish to apply to and at what university the deparment is located in.

Are there any specific instances that you can illustrate?

Hello, thank you for your question. I cannot speak for specific graduate programs or schools, but I can provide some general information about the competitiveness of admissions for applied physics and physics PhD programs.

In general, the admission process for graduate programs in the sciences, including physics and applied physics, is highly competitive. This is because there are typically a limited number of spots available and a large number of qualified applicants.

In terms of the specific comparison between applied physics and physics PhD programs, it is difficult to say which one may be more competitive as it can vary depending on the specific program and school. However, in general, applied physics programs tend to have a more interdisciplinary focus and may have a slightly different set of admission criteria compared to traditional physics programs.

Regarding your observation about not being able to apply to both departments at some schools, this is likely due to the fact that the two departments may have different application requirements and areas of focus. It is best to carefully research and consider which department aligns more closely with your interests and qualifications before applying.

I hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your graduate school applications.
