Without addressing the details, there are certainly strong indications that quantum gravity can be formulated in a manner far simpler than is commonly done. Another technique that suggests this is the QCD squared paradigm. Basically, lots of stuff in gravity calculations cancels out, probably due to ill understood symmetries.
